How do we make a difference in our community?
We all know that health is a very complicated subject and most of us know what to do when we are not feeling well. A visit to the Dr. is the norm but there are other factors that influence our health. One of those is how we think and feel about our quality of living. There are few that realize how inequality in healthy opportunities also has a huge impact on health. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has a huge initiative to help communities gain health equity. Check out the website and pay special attention to the video by "Health Equity in Action" and then scroll down to check out "Communities Making a Positive Change in Health", the stories are really inspiring! What is Health Equity?
Part of Health Equity is understanding the Social Determinants of Health. The video below is a TED talk by Claire Pomeroy who experience health inequity firsthand. She escaped out of an abusive life of a teenager and fled to the streets. She was in the foster system and made her way to a higher education. She is now a champion for those who are unseen.
